Using a Total Nutritional Therapy for the Treatment of Terminal Cancer Patients Who have Failed Medical Cancer Treatment
Introduction This report summarizes our first phase study of cancer patients after we announced a 5-Year Plan for Conquering Cancer on January 15, 2008. In that announcement we stated that based on our research on organ cloning and regeneration involving stem cells there are fundamental differences in the requirement of vital nutrients between cancer cells and normal cells. Our cellular and animal experiments indicate that those combinations of nutritional substances that promote normal cell proliferation and differentiation actually caused termination of cancer cell growth. Thus, we conjured that the major cause of human cancer occurence may be related to insufficient uptake of nutrients. Therefore, in an effort to conquer cancer we decided to start a research in humans by using a total nutritional therapy. The procedures of our research involve multiple phases. In the first phase we would start with terminal or end-stage cancer patients who have failed medical treatment of cancer. We would provide them with total nutrition as “the last supper” to obtain statistical data. By taking this approach, on the one hand, we could save life and time by avoiding the delay due to seeking regulatory approval for medical clinical studies; on the other hand, we could explore the possibility of conquering cancer by using a total nutritional therapy. If the results of studies turned out to be promising, we could apply for formal medical experiments to the State regulatory agency, which would include clinical studies of late stage, middle stage, and early stage cancer patients and cancer prevention. Started on January 25, 2008 the first phase of our cancer studies was focused on terminal cancer patients who have failed medical treatment by providing them with total nutrition for free. We planned to conclude this phase of studies after 3 months of treatment with our total nutritional therapy and report to the public. However, on May 12, 2008 a strong earthquake struck Sichuan province in China. As we are the leading organization in treating burns, wounds and ulcers in the field, we had to divert from the cancer research and focused the majority of our energy and resources on medical rescuing efforts in the disaster zones. After we successfully accomplished the quake relief and rescue mission, we refocused on the cancer studies and summarized the results from the first phase study. We here report the summary of our study that should shed new light on human anticancer research.
Aims of Study
The aims of the study are: • To treat terminal cancer patients who have failed medical treatment of cancer with a total nutritional therapy by providing them with total nutrients necessary for normal cellular activities, including carbohydrates, proteins (all essential amino acids), multiple fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and a combination of nutrients for stem cells (“Regenerative Nutrients”); • Coupled with a dietary plan according to the human circadian clock, to provide different nutrients based on the different requirements of 80% of human cells that have their own schedules of activity and rest at different times, so as to restore the functions of the gastrointestinal tract in a last chance effort, which in turn would ensure full digestion, absorption and utilization, strengthen the normal cells, restore the regenerative functions of tissues and organs in order to resist the cancer cells’ harm to the normal cells, thereby fighting cancer through nourishment of the normal cells; and • To explore the possibility of using our total nutritional therapy for efficacious treatment of cancer in terminal patients by using food supplements.
Methods
Patients or their family members registered for the study online by filling up an application form for treatment with our total nutritional therapy and uploading their medical records. After evaluation of their records our team of physicians designed the treatment protocols and provided the patients with a product for restoring functions of the gastrointestinal tract, MEBO Gastrointestinal Capsules, as well as a food supplemental for regeneration of the body, MEBO Elixir.
Patient Enrollment From January 25, 2008 to June 12, 2008 there has been 1313 patients applied online for the study, among which 359 qualified for the study. Three-hundreds and forty-five patients enrolled in the study, among which 204 actually participated in the study, including 122 male, 82 female, age ranging from 3 to 88. (Note: Since most of the patients who applied for the study were still undergoing medical treatment of cancer and our study was focused only on those terminal patients who have failed medical cancer treatment, most patients applied were not included in this phase of our cancer studies.)
Staging of Terminal Cancer
All of the patients in the study are terminal cancer patients (who have failed medical treatment of cancer with distal metastasis and were at a terminal stage or waiting to die), among which some were being salvaged or waiting to die, some at a relatively stable stage and still capable of self-management or even simple movement. To differentiate the degree of severity of the diseases among the patients we divided the patients according to the following stages: 1. End-of-Life Salvage Stage, Terminal Cancer Patients: 63, tumor metastasized, whole body in very poor conditions, extreme cathexia, being salvaged at the end of life. 2. Progressive Stage, Terminal Cancer Patients: 125, tumor metastasized or reoccurrence of primary tumors, whole body in poor conditions, failed medical treatment of cancer, obvious cathexia, rapid progression of disease, waiting to die. 3. Stabilized Stage, Terminal Cancer Patients: 16, tumor metastasized, whole body in fair conditions, stabilized after medical treatment of cancer, hopelessly waiting for improvement.
Classification of Patients According to Type of Cancer
Lung Cancer: 93; Liver Cancer: 15; Gastrointestinal Carcinoma: 45 (including Esophagus Cancer: 9; Gastric Cancer: 14; Colon Cancer: 7; and Rectal Cancer: 15); Pancreas Cancer: 4; Breast Cancer: 7; Cholangio Carcinoma: 4; Leukemia: 2; Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: 5; Uteral/Cervical Carcinoma: 3; Ovarian Cancer: 4; Thymus Carcinoma: 1; Oral Cancer: 3; Left Buccal Cancer: 1; Pleura Cancer:1; Testical Carcinoma: 1; Bladder/Kidney Cancer: 4; Prostate Cancer: 1; Neurinoma: 1; Intracranial Tumor: 2; Intraperitoneal Tumor: 1; and Neuroblastoma: 5.
Results
Patients who have participated in the treatment with the total nutritional therapy for more than 4 months: • Stabilized Stage (16): 16 survived with improved prognosis, 100% survival rate; • Progressive Stage (125): 61.54 % survival rate, disease stabilized, which is distinctly different from the 3-month survival rate under the international cancer treatment standards; • End-of-Life Salvage Stage (63): 20 survived, 33.33% survival rate, which is distinctly different from the half-month survival rate under the international cancer treatment standards. Among the 63 patients at this stage, the survival rate for those who participated in the treatment with the total nutritional therapy for more than 15 days is 44.44%; more than 1 month, 44.44%; more than 2 months, 41.67%; and more than 3 months, 40.00%.
Evaluation of the Data
1. There is a significant increase not only in the overall survival rate, but also separately for various stages and types of cancer; a significant improvement of patients’ functions of gastrointestinal tract; improvement of some patients’ quality of sleep; increase of some patients’ weight; enhancement of some patients’ physical strength; reduction of some patients’ pain; extension of patients’ lives; improvement of quality of life and reduction of pain. These results are consistent with those we obtained from cellular and animal experiments.
2. Currently there is not a unified, authoritative international survival rate for terminal cancer patients who have failed medical treatment of cancer and are at a stage of end-of-life salvage. Generally each hospital has its own empirical standard of a half-mnth death notification. In this study the statistics of the survival of the terminal patients at the end-of-life stage in this study, albeit preliminary, are very exciting. These patients not only suffered from the relentless invasion of cancer, but also various virulent complications. Treatment allowing survival for just half a month is already generally considered to be at a high level. Here, in our study, there are even about 40% of patients survived and continued to live for more than 4 months. If this data were obtained in a formal, standardized clinical trial, it would offer us a great hope for conquering cancer. However, this study is a statistical study, or just an exploratory research on the modality. We could further envision that if this study were conducted in an environment without involving chemotherapy but under adequate medical supervision, the survival rate could be even higher.
3. Based on the data of those terminal cancer patients at the stabilized stage, the conditions of all of them are more stabilized and manifested obvious improvement in symptoms after the treatment with the total nutritional therapy. Although it cannot be excluded that some patients may have attempted to please us when communicated online, the absence of a worse prognosis of these patients indicates that our total nutritional therapy is beneficial to the patients in their fight with cancer.
4. Attached to this report is an electronic copy of the original research data, and our summary of the data, which remains objective without any addition of subjective evaluation. However, it is necessary to point out that the data has not been processed according to standard statistics. This is because the initial data before the study were obtained from the patients’ online applications, which may vary significantly. Therefore, we only use the simple percentile data here. As we have obtained original raw data, we could process the data according to standard statistics according to the need for research in the future.
Future Research Plan
According to the plan outlined in our Announcement of Conquering Cancer in 5 Years on January 15, 2008, we have completed our first phase study. To conquer cancer as early as possible, we need to continue our research unconditionally. However, our next phase of study will include late stage cancer patients who are still undergoing medical treatment of cancer. Based our studies of cells after treatment with our total nutritional therapy, we found that there may be a conflict between our total nutritional therapy and the current medical treatment of cancer such as chemotherapy. As we need to comply with relevant regulatory rules of the State and obtain permission for clinical trials from the government agency, we now temporarily suspend execution of our plan outlined in the Announcement until the permission from the regulatory agency is obtained. Thus, the counting of the time for our 5-year plan will not resume until the start of our next phase of research. However, for those terminal cancer patients who survived in our first phase study, we will continue to provide our total nutritional support.
Our Appeal
On May 19, 2008 the World Health Organization (WHO) published the data on human cancer occurrence and death, which indicates that cancer has become the leading killer of humans; for every 4-5 human deaths there is one death from cancer. Current measures taken for cancer treatment and prevention have proven to be ineffective. More grimly, there has been approximately 800% increase in both cancer occurrence and death. Although there might be an increase in many disease-causing factors, based on these numbers from the WHO it has to be admitted that overall the efforts on cancer intervention and prevention have failed. These numbers tell us that in terms of living environment, medical modalities and preventive measures against cancer it needs to be re-assessed whether the current environment and measures are in accordance with the laws of life and whether the current anticancer measures are truly effective. We here appeal to the governments and non-government organizations in the world: let’s focus the funds and resources on cancer research as cancer might strike you any time.
